Lyon Bar Guide

30+ bars across Lyon's drinking neighbourhoods, curated by editors who know the city.

Lyon drinks the way it eats — seriously, locally, with deep regional pride. Beaujolais is on every wine list. The bouchons (the Lyonnais bistro tradition) blend into the cocktail scene at the edges. Lyon does not try to be Paris and does not need to.

Five neighbourhoods cluster the scene. Vieux Lyon (the Renaissance old town) wraps the Saone with stone bouchons. Presqu'île between the rivers runs the cocktail and shopping spine. Croix-Rousse on the silk-worker hill is the alternative district. Confluence at the river junction is the modernist new district. Guillotière east of the Rhone is the multi-cultural district.

Beaujolais glasses run €4 to €7. Cocktails €11 to €14. Cheaper than Paris, in line with Bordeaux. Tipping is rounding up. Aperitivo from 6pm. Most bars run to 1am, weekend bars 2am. Reserve Le Comptoir de la Bourse and Antiquaire on weekends.

Neighbourhood Guide

Vieux Lyon

The Renaissance old town along the Saone. Stone bouchons, traboules (covered passages), and the city's most heritage-rich drinking. Cobblestones and candles.

Presqu'île

The peninsula between the two rivers. The cocktail and shopping spine. Belle-époque bars, polished hotel rooms, and the densest concentration of serious cocktail programmes.

Croix-Rousse

The silk-worker hill. Bohemian, alternative, and the natural-wine and craft-cocktail district. Walks here are steep. The reward is the views and the rooms.

Confluence

The modernist new district where the Rhone meets the Saone. Rooftop bars, designer hotels, and a younger after-work crowd.

Guillotière

East of the Rhone. The multi-cultural district. Cheaper drinks, more local customers, and the most adventurous food and drink in Lyon.
