Phra Nakhon — Bangkok

Phra Nakhon is the original Bangkok — Rattanakosin island, the founding district, the temples (Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew) and the kingdom's administrative spine. The bar scene runs quieter than Sukhumvit or Thonglor, but the rooms that exist here lean older, more architectural, more rooted to place.

Old city. Temple-quiet during the day, slowly waking after sunset, dense around the Tha Tien and Tha Maharaj river piers. Drinkers here are mostly residents and the architecture-and-history crowd; tourists head to Khao San two streets over.
