Punta del Este Bar Guide

30+ bars across Punta del Este's drinking neighbourhoods, curated by editors who know the coast.

Punta del Este is South America's St-Tropez. The summer scene runs from December to March, when the wealthy Argentinian, Brazilian, and European jet-set fills the José Ignacio dunes with sunset cocktail terraces. La Huella has poured drinks for thirty years and remains the most awarded beach restaurant on the continent. The drinks lean Tannat (Uruguay's signature red), Fernet, and Aperol spritzes.

Five neighbourhoods cluster the action. Punta Centro is the heritage downtown spine. La Barra runs the post-college party-bar district. José Ignacio holds the jet-set sunset terraces. Manantiales covers the boutique beach-club quarter. Punta Ballena is the cliff-side district between them.

Cocktails run UYU 700 to UYU 1,200 ($18 to $30). Tipping is 10 percent. Most bars run to 4am, beach clubs to 6am. The season is December to March; out of season, half the bars close.
