Ray's in the City sits at 240 Peachtree Street, the corner of downtown Atlanta where conventiongoers, theater crowds, and anniversary couples all end up looking for the same thing. Go for the oysters-and-martinis hour if you want the best value and the liveliest bar. Go on a weekend for the full date-night treatment with piano and a window table. Skip it if you came for a casual beer in jeans, because this is a place that rewards a collared shirt and a reservation.

Yelp reviewers, more than 1,500 of them, return to the same notes again and again: fresh fish, attentive service, and a bar team that makes a serious martini. The restaurant ranks #26 of more than 2,300 Atlanta restaurants on Tripadvisor, with a 4.3 there and a 4.6 across thousands of Google reviews. That consistency over two decades is the rarest thing on a downtown corner.

Downtown Atlanta does not have many grown-up bars that take reservations and pour like they mean it, which is exactly why Ray's keeps its regulars. It sits a short walk from the Fairlie-Poplar district, Centennial Olympic Park, and the Peachtree Center MARTA stop, so a pre-theater drink or a post-conference dinner lands without a car.

For the pairing-minded, the move is simple. Start with East and West Coast oysters, drink the martini that the bar is known for, then let the kitchen send whatever fish came in freshest. Add a glass from the reserve list if the night is worth it, because the cellar runs well past the by-the-glass board.

Who it is for: a downtown date that needs to impress, an after-work raw-bar ritual, and anyone who wants a martini made the old way. Who it is not for: a casual jeans-and-a-pint night, since Ray's runs polished, social, and proudly dressed-up from the first oyster to the last pour.
