Our Take on Freida
· Casual Named for a Brooklyn 99 character but built like a Mexico City corner bar, Freida Margolis on West Lynn Road runs the most disciplined agave programme in the city. The back-bar carries close to one hundred and forty mezcals and tequilas, with serious depth on small Oaxacan producers (Real Minero, Mal de Amor, Lalocura) that no other Auckland address is buying direct.
Owner-operator Joe Slater built the cocktail programme around margarita and palomas variants and a short list of bartender's-choice agave riffs; the kitchen is short Mexican-Pacific — al pastor tacos, a single faultless aguachile, churros. The room is twenty-eight seats, fluorescent-lit on purpose, with no music after 10pm by deliberate policy. Fifth because no other Auckland bar takes agave this seriously and because the casual atmosphere is doing genuine work.
