Our Take on The Liberty

Austin's music scene has a lot of famous venues. The Liberty is not one of them, and that is precisely why it matters. The room holds about 120 people, the stage is barely raised, and the PA system is exactly loud enough for the kind of band that plays here: local acts working their way up, touring musicians looking for a Tuesday show, and established locals who come back because the crowd at The Liberty actually pays attention.

The bar keeps it simple. Cold beer at honest prices, a few wells, nothing that needs a menu. The focus is the stage. The room is lit with the kind of minimal lighting that makes everyone look like they are exactly where they should be. East Austin's creative community has adopted The Liberty as a reliable venue in the way that reliable venues get adopted: quietly, without fanfare, over many years of showing up.

The cover charge is low — usually between $5 and $10 — and the quality-to-cost ratio on live music is exceptional. We have seen future touring artists play here to 40 people who talked about it for years afterward. That is the kind of thing that only happens at small, trusted rooms that have good taste in booking. The Liberty is one of those rooms.

Lone Star Tall Boy
The canonical order at any East Austin music venue. Cold, cheap, carried in one hand while the other is free to applaud. Under $5.
Whiskey and Soda
A well whiskey, soda, and ice. The drink that keeps you functional through two sets without slowing down the music. Order two at a time at the bar before the band starts.
Whatever's Cold and Draft
The Liberty rotates its taps. Ask what is coldest and freshest. The answer changes but the advice does not: get it in a pint glass and stay for the set.
Best Time to Visit
Thursday through Saturday nights from 9pm. Arrive before the band starts to get a spot near the stage. Wednesday shows often feature emerging artists at their most raw.
Who It's For
Music first, drinks second. Anyone who wants to discover Austin bands before they get big. People who believe a $7 show can be better than a $70 show most nights of the week.
