Jazz Four Nights a Week on Kayu Aya
Seken runs on the second floor of IZE Seminyak on Jalan Kayu Aya, and it programs music the way serious bars program spirits. Live bands take Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, DJs hold Thursdays, and the calendar splits into named nights: Primetime for standards, Jazztronic for nu jazz and neo soul, Improve for open format players, and Infusion for Afro Latin grooves, per the bar's published schedule.
NOW! Bali introduced it as Seminyak's swanky new jazz and cocktail bar, and Surf Time put it more bluntly: Seken is more than a bar. Music direction comes from Bali based producer Rizky Argadipraja, who records as Greybox.
The Room
An upstairs lounge built around the stage rather than the bottle wall, with seating arranged to face the players. The volume is set for listening, not talking over. It borrows from Tokyo and Jakarta listening rooms more than from Seminyak's beach clubs.
The Drinks
The cocktail list runs classic frames with Indonesian accents, built to survive a two set night. Wanderlog reviewers consistently rate it among Seminyak's best live music rooms, and the bar's own events page shows the program updating weekly. Mon through Sat the room runs 18:00 to 02:00, late by Seminyak bar standards.
The Crowd
Musicians on their nights off, longer stay residents, and travelers who want one night in Seminyak that does not end at a beach club. Band nights draw the fullest rooms. The crowd listens, which still surprises first timers.
The Neighborhood
Jalan Kayu Aya, the Oberoi eat street, holds Seminyak's densest run of restaurants and bars. Seken sits above the strip rather than on it, which keeps the noise out. Motel Mexicola and La Favela are both within ten minutes on foot when the night needs a louder second act.
When to Go
Wednesday's Primetime set is the purist's night. Friday's Improve brings the players and the risk. Arrive before the first set near 21:00 for seats that face the stage.
Practical notes: reserve through sekenbali.com or on +62 811 1001 6300 for band nights; walk-ins clear on Mondays and Tuesdays when the stage rests. The entrance runs through the IZE Seminyak lobby to level 2. Closed Sundays, per the official site.
What Regulars Say
- NOW! Bali credits the room with giving Seminyak an actual jazz program rather than background sets.
- Surf Time praises the booking depth under Greybox's direction.
- Wanderlog reviewers rank it among the area's best live music bars and note the late 02:00 close.
Who It Is For
- Listeners who want a set list, not a playlist
- A late drink after dinner on Kayu Aya
- Avoid if you want beach club energy or Sunday hours
Bali books plenty of cover bands; Seken built a program. Four named nights, a working music director, and a room arranged around the stage make it the island's most serious listening bar. For the hidden door version of a Bali night, head inland to Whisper Cove Bar in Ubud.
