Our Take

Maggie Choo's: Bangkok's Most Transported Bar Experience

Descend the staircase beneath Novotel Silom and the city disappears entirely. Maggie Choo's is built around a single sustained idea — 1930s Shanghai — and executed with a completeness that most themed bars never approach. The silk curtains, carved ironwork, paper lanterns, and deep red upholstery are theatrical props in a room that earns its drama. The design was the work of Ashley Sutton, the Bangkok-based designer responsible for several of the city's most visually ambitious venues, and this remains his most convincing creation.

The jazz programme is real rather than decorative. A house band anchors most nights, and the quality of both the musicianship and the setlists reflects genuine curation. The cocktail menu leans into the setting: Shanghai Slings, jasmine-infused spirits, lychee and longan, rice wine-washed vermouths. None of it is gimmicky precisely because the bar team commits to it fully. The drinks are good enough to stand on their own. If you are building a Bangkok date night, Maggie Choo's gives you two hours that feel unlike anything else in the city.

It attracts a well-dressed, mixed crowd — Bangkok's hotel guests alongside the city's own professionals who treat it as a quarterly special occasion. Service is theatrical in the best sense: attentive without breaking the mood. Walk in dressed well, arrive at 8pm before the band starts, order the tasting menu of classic cocktails, and stay for the first set. You will not regret it. Our Bangkok bar guide ranks this among the city's essential experiences.

What to Order

Shanghai Sling

The house take on the Singapore Sling, built with Chinese baijiu instead of gin, cherry liqueur, pineapple, and bitters. A perfect fit for the setting.

Jasmine Martini

Jasmine-infused vodka, white grape, citrus. Delicate, aromatic, and delivered in a coupe that suits the room.

Lychee Old Fashioned

Aged Thai rum, lychee demerara, aromatic bitters, served over a crystal ice sphere. A house signature worth ordering twice.

Classic Cocktail Tasting Menu

Three 60ml pours through the signature cocktails. The best way to explore the range before settling on a favourite for the rest of the evening.

Best Time to Visit

Wednesday from 8pm for the most atmospheric weeknight experience. Friday from 7:30pm if you want the full show — book ahead and dress for the occasion.

Who It's For

Couples on special occasions, design-conscious travellers, jazz enthusiasts, and anyone who wants a Bangkok evening that feels cinematic. Groups of 6 or fewer work best.
