Our Take on Gran Bar Danzón
There are bars that open and close with the seasons in Buenos Aires, following whatever concept the neighbourhood finds interesting that particular year. Then there is Gran Bar Danzón, which has been on Libertad since 1996 and has never needed to follow anything. It set its own direction from the start and everything else followed.
The bar occupies a narrow, double-height space in Recoleta with exposed brick, candlelight that barely reaches the ceiling, and a wine list that runs to over 200 Argentine labels organised by region and producer. The cocktail programme is classical without being rigid: expect proper ice, precise measurement, and no garnishes that are not doing genuine flavour work. The signature martini has been rebuilt a dozen times since opening. The current version, made with vermouth sourced from Mendoza, is the best iteration yet.
The crowd skews older and more local than at the Palermo bars. Tables fill by 9pm on weekends. Reservations are not obligatory but arriving without one after 8:30pm means standing at the bar, which is a perfectly fine option if you are drinking wine. If you're looking for the best date night bars in Buenos Aires, this address belongs at the top of the list alongside Florería Atlántico.
