Three Dots and a Dash

Cocktail Bars $$

Three Dots and a Dash takes its name from the Morse code signal for victory. It sits below street level on N Clark Street in River North, reached through an alleyway entrance that heightens anticipation before you even get to the bar. The space inside is a committed, un-ironic tiki environment: bamboo, carved tikis, tribal masks, dim lighting, and 50 seats arranged around a long wooden bar.

The rum collection runs past 200 labels, organized by provenance and style. The bar stocks Jamaican agricole, aged Barbadian, funky Haitian, and expressions from nearly every rum-producing island. The cocktail menu changes seasonally but always centers on classic tiki construction — layered rums, fresh juice, orgeat, and house-made falernum. Nothing here is diluted for the River North crowd. These are serious drinks made by people who know tropical cocktail history from Donn Beach to David Wondrich.

Communal punch bowls, available in sizes serving 2 to 8 people, are the best way to experience the bar for groups. The Suffering Bastard bowl, flaming and theatrical, is the one to order for a table of 4. It tastes as good as it looks. The best date night bars in Chicago include plenty of elegant options, but Three Dots offers something different: genuine fun, flavour-forward drinks, and a room that produces genuine delight.

The entrance is through an alley off Clark Street marked only by a small sign and a bamboo gate. This is intentional. The theatricality of arriving is part of the experience. Once downstairs, the bar accommodates around 50 people, and on weekends it fills completely by 8pm. Reservations are strongly recommended for groups of 3 or more on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The staff know their rum. Ask for a recommendation and specify how strong, how sweet, and how adventurous you want to go. They will find something specific for you rather than sending you back to the menu. There are also 3 cocktails served on draft — efficient and consistent, a smart solution for the bar's popularity.

Three Dots sits within walking distance of The Aviary and several strong River North cocktail bars. If you are planning an evening in the neighbourhood, do this bar first, then move somewhere quieter as the night goes on. The music gets louder as the hour advances.

Among Chicago's cocktail bars, Three Dots and a Dash is the most purely enjoyable. The Violet Hour is more serious. The Aviary is more theatrical. But Three Dots has something neither of those places offers: unapologetic fun, anchored in genuine craft. We recommend it without reservation to anyone who drinks cocktails and knows that tropical drinks are not a lesser category. The best bars in Chicago include this bar on every list that counts.
