Den Glade Gris

Sports Bar Latin Quarter $

The Happy Pig is what happens when a football bar, a student dive and a comedy club share one of Copenhagen's oldest buildings and nobody asks them to tidy up.

Den Glade Gris sits on Lille Kannikestræde 3, a narrow lane in the Latin Quarter about 100 metres from Rundetårn and five minutes on foot from Nørreport Station. The building is among the oldest in the city, which explains the low ceilings and the rustic, lived-in feel that no designer could fake.

Its claim to fame is specific: this has been the preferred Copenhagen home of Manchester United supporters since 2006, a status documented by the Danish supporter site OldTrafford.dk. United fixtures fill the room, but the screens run far beyond one club. LiberoGuide calls it "an out-and-out football bar" and notes that its position by Copenhagen University packs the place with students every open night.

The student economics matter. LiberoGuide reported two litre cocktail jugs at 39 to 49 kroner before 10pm, a price that barely buys a single pint elsewhere in the city centre. The beer list runs seven taps and around 30 bottles, so there is range behind the bargains. This is the cheap, loud end of the spectrum among Copenhagen sports bars, and it owns that position without apology.

What to order: a cocktail jug before 10pm if you are in a group, since the 39 to 49 kroner pricing is the house's signature move. Otherwise work the seven taps, which rotate, or pick from the bottle list. Nobody comes here for wine.

Who it is for: United supporters in exile, students stretching a budget, and anyone who wants their football with noise and Danish stand-up on the side. The bar runs open mic comedy every Thursday and live music downstairs on Fridays and Saturdays, so a match here rarely ends when the whistle goes. It is the wrong room for a quiet pint; for that, Hviid's Vinstue has been pouring since 1723.

Best time to go: Thursday opens at 6pm and runs to 5am with comedy in the mix. Friday opens at 2pm, which makes it a workable spot for early Premier League kick-offs, and Saturday runs 4pm to 5am. The bar currently keeps weekend-focused hours and stays dark early in the week, so check the schedule before a Monday fixture. The Copenhagen guide lists alternatives for those nights, and our guide to watching the game ranks the city's match-day rooms side by side.
