Black Swan Saloon spent a decade as one of Deep Ellum's most-awarded cocktail bars before the 2020 shutdown closed it. Founder Gabe Sanchez brought it back in East Dallas in 2024, and the city's drinkers followed.
The original opened in 2010 and won a stack of awards across its run, per CultureMap Dallas, which tracked the closure and the comeback. The new room sits at 1623 Hall Street, in the former Fiction Coffee space, with Sanchez behind the stick alongside partners who also run the bar Saint Valentine. Dallasites101 covered the reopening as the return of a local institution.
The format is the appeal. This is a bartender's bar, low-lit and unfussy, built for people who want a precise classic rather than a theatrical production. Order an Old Fashioned and watch it get made with care, or hand the menu back and describe what you feel like drinking. Sanchez built a following on exactly that kind of off-the-cuff service.
The boilermakers section is the move for a second round. CultureMap singles out the potent beer-and-shot combinations, which pair well with the saloon's stripped-back, no-frills mood. Pricing stays reasonable for the quality, landing in the low-to-mid range rather than the hotel-lounge tier.
It works best for a relaxed night with people who care about what is in the glass, or a solo seat at the bar on a quieter weeknight. It is not a scene bar and does not pretend to be, so skip it if you want bottle service or a dance floor. The room is small, which means weekend nights fill fast.
The reopening mattered to Dallas drinkers because Black Swan was never a trend bar. Gabe Sanchez built the original on consistency and a deep classics knowledge, and the East Dallas room carries the same approach into a smaller, more residential setting. CultureMap framed the return as the city recovering a piece of its cocktail history.
The drinks list stays tight on purpose. Expect properly built Old Fashioneds, Sazeracs and Manhattans, plus a rotating handful of originals that change with what Sanchez and the team are working on. The bar stocks more whiskey than its size suggests, and the staff will pour a flight if you want to compare.
The room itself is dark wood and low light, the kind of place that fills with regulars who know the bartenders by name. Dallasites101 describes it as the neighbourhood spot that out-of-towners wish they had nearby. Seating is limited, so a party of two does better than a party of six.
The crowd runs older and more conversation-minded than the Deep Ellum club blocks, which suits the format. Come for a slow first drink and a longer second, and let the bartender steer if the menu does not jump out.
For timing, early evening Tuesday through Thursday is the sweet spot for conversation and a bartender's full attention. Black Swan pairs naturally with Midnight Rambler downtown and Atwater Alley in Knox-Henderson for a longer crawl.
