Our Take on Pharmacia Bar

Pharmacia occupies a building that once housed the Portuguese Pharmacy Museum, and the bar has leaned fully into that history. Antique medicine cabinets line the walls. Old medicine labels are framed like art. Cocktails arrive in laboratory glassware. What could easily become gimmicky is instead executed with enough conviction that the concept earns its conceit. The drinks are genuinely good, not just photogenic.

The terrace is the reason most people come, and with good reason. It overlooks a section of Bairro Alto with panoramic views toward the Tagus, and on a warm evening in April or October the light turns the view into something worth the trip alone. The cocktail list takes inspiration from old pharmaceutical recipes, Portuguese herbs, and seasonal botanicals. The team changes the menu every few months, which means repeat visits always surface something new.

The restaurant upstairs, run by the same Farmacia group, receives more attention in the food press but the bar is its own destination. We recommend skipping dinner and arriving just for drinks. The Bairro Alto Hotel Bar is a short walk away if you want to continue the evening at a more formal pace, or the hidden gem bars of Lisbon point toward less well-known alternatives in the same neighbourhood.

What to Order

The Tincture
House signature built around local herbs and Portuguese spirits. Served in a small apothecary bottle. Complex and genuinely original.
Sunset Spritz
A seasonal spritz built for the terrace. Vinho verde, elderflower, and a dry citrus finish. Order at least one as the sun drops.
Herb Garden Gimlet
Gin infused with local thyme and rosemary. Sharp, aromatic, and excellent as an aperitif before a late Lisbon dinner.
Medronho Sour
Medronho is the Algarve's firewater, and here it gets the treatment it deserves. Balanced, smoky, and distinctly Portuguese.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday evenings from 18:00 to 20:30 are ideal for the terrace. On Fridays and Saturdays the terrace is full by 20:00. The interior bar is less crowded and works well later in the evening after the tourist wave has thinned out.

Who It Is For

Couples wanting something distinctive, first-time visitors to Lisbon who want a local flavour beyond the obvious, and cocktail drinkers with a preference for innovation over tradition. The theatrical presentation makes it a strong choice for visitors who want a bar that feels like a proper experience.
