Nightjar

Jazz / Cocktail Bar Live Music Bars $$$ ★ 4.8

Nightjar requires advance reservations for all visits. Walk-ins are taken only when tables are available — which is rarely. Book at least 3 days ahead on weekends.

Nightjar sits below street level on City Road, announced by nothing more than a small sign and a low light. Step inside and the 1920s swallow you whole. The low ceilings, tightly packed tables, and live band in the corner create a density of atmosphere that most bars spend years trying to manufacture. At Nightjar, it appears to be effortless.

The cocktail list is organised by era, moving from pre-Prohibition classics through the Jazz Age and into the Postwar period. Each section reflects genuine historical scholarship, and the drinks are built accordingly. A Corpse Reviver served with a small ritual, a Prohibition-era punch that arrives in a teapot — there is theatre here, but it is always grounded in taste rather than gimmick.

The live music anchors everything. Jazz trios, blues guitarists, and swing ensembles rotate through the stage at the far end of the room. The sound level sits at the precise point where you can hear your companion without raising your voice but still feel fully absorbed in the performance. It is not easy to get right. Nightjar gets it right every night.

For our editors, Nightjar sits in a category alongside The Connaught Bar and Lyaness as a place you take someone when you want them to understand why London belongs in the conversation about the world's great bar cities.

Saturday evenings from 8pm for the full atmosphere. Tuesday and Wednesday offer a quieter, more conversational experience with the same quality drinks and music. Avoid arriving after 10pm without a reservation.

Jazz and music lovers. Couples looking for genuine date-night atmosphere. Anyone who takes cocktails seriously. Groups of 2 to 4 who want a full evening in one place rather than a bar crawl.
