The Cocktail Bar That Defined British Bartending
The American Bar at the Savoy has been pouring cocktails continuously since 1893, making it the oldest surviving cocktail bar in Britain. Ada Coleman invented the Hanky Panky here in 1903. Harry Craddock, author of the Savoy Cocktail Book, presided over the bar through the 1920s and 30s. The room itself was redesigned by Basil Ionides in 1929 and the art deco original survives.
The cocktails are immaculate. The current head bartender continues the tradition of seasonal menu rotations rooted in the original Savoy book. Order a White Lady, a Hanky Panky, or whatever the seasonal menu suggests. The drinks come priced for the room and the history.
The crowd is hotel guests, special-occasion couples, and visiting cocktail enthusiasts who treat the Savoy as a pilgrimage. Pair with Connaught Bar or the heritage Dukes Bar for a complete London hotel cocktail evening.
