San Francisco Roots, Barrio Manila Taps
20Mission Cerveza brews on site at Calle 16 #43F-66 in barrio Manila, the quieter grid west of Provenza in El Poblado. The project grew out of San Francisco's 20Mission community and opened here in September 2018; Medellin Guru's profile credits it with upping the bar for craft beer in the city, and the room still runs on that ambition.
Six house styles anchor the taps: Blonde, Witbier, Pale Ale, Porter, IPA, and Saison, with a house ginger beer and tonic water rounding the board. Everything pours a few meters from where it ferments, which keeps the lineup honest and the turnover fast.
The Room
A big converted space split between brewhouse, long bar, restaurant tables, and a stage corner that hosts local and visiting acts on weekends. It feels more gastropub than taproom; groups settle in for the evening rather than rotate through, and the long tables are built for exactly that.
The Drinks
Order a flight across the six styles first, then settle on the IPA or the Saison, the two pours regulars defend hardest. The house ginger beer covers the non-drinkers properly. Kitchen-wise the smoked ribs are the call; Tripadvisor reviewers repeatedly rank them among the best plates in Medellin, bar or otherwise. Prices stay barrio-friendly against Provenza equivalents.
The Crowd
A steady mix of expats, paisa craft beer loyalists, and Manila locals; afternoons run quiet, weekend evenings fill around the live acts. Note the clock: Tuesday through Thursday the taps close at 20:00, weekends at midnight, and Mondays the doors stay shut.
The Neighborhood
Barrio Manila is the calm grid between Avenida El Poblado and the river, ten minutes on foot from both Metro Poblado station and the Provenza restaurant blocks. The neighborhood runs hostels, studios, and kitchens rather than clubs, which suits a brewery built for sessions, with Medellin Beer Factory holding the louder end of the Poblado beer map.
When to Go
Friday and Saturday evenings put the live acts on and fill the long tables; come before 19:00 for a seat near the stage. Weekday afternoons are flight-and-ribs territory with the brewhouse working in view, but watch the clock, since Tuesday through Thursday the taps close at 20:00. Sunday afternoons split the difference.
What Regulars Say
- The ribs are the sleeper hit; order them before the kitchen queue builds.
- Weekday hours end at 20:00; check the clock before you cross town.
- Weekend live music fills the room; come early for a table near the stage.
- Manila is calmer than Provenza; this is the relaxed end of Poblado.
Who It Is For
- Craft beer drinkers auditing the local scene
- Casual groups who want food that outpunches bar food
- Avoid for a late night; weekday taps close at 20:00
The San Francisco lineage shows in the details: proper glassware, style-true recipes, and a tap board that does not chase trends. In a city where craft beer still fights for cooler space against Aguila and Club Colombia, a brewery holding six consistent house styles is doing the quiet, necessary work, and Manila is better for it.
