The Bar That Started Modern Australian Cocktails
Black Pearl opened on Brunswick Street in 2002 and effectively started the modern Australian craft cocktail movement. Before Black Pearl, Melbourne and Sydney were beer and wine cities and serious cocktails were rare. Tash Conte and her partners built the bar that established Australian cocktail discipline.
The cocktail programme is rooted in modern American technique. The seasonal menu rotates regularly. The bar runs late — until 3am — making it one of the better Melbourne late-night cocktail options.
The crowd is mid-thirties Fitzroy locals and visiting cocktail enthusiasts on a pilgrimage. Pair with The Everleigh a few blocks away for a complete Fitzroy cocktail evening.
