Straf Bar

Hotel Bar Cocktail Bars $$$ Duomo

Straf Bar fronts the STRAF hotel at Via San Raffaele 3, roughly 50 meters from the Duomo, and it is the rare hotel lounge that Milanese drinkers use as their own. Architect Vincenzo de Cotiis built the room from raw concrete, burnished brass, and recycled fiberglass, and the result still looks ahead of its neighbors two decades on.

Anyone who wants a design-first drink in the city's most touristed square will love it. Anyone after a deep cocktail program with obscure spirits will not, because the list here favors well-made standards over experimentation.

Inside, works tied to the Arte Povera movement hang against distressed walls, and vintage sofas absorb the afternoon crowd. The city guide Zero notes the eclectic soundtrack that shifts from vintage tracks by day to DJ sets after dark, and the street-side seats outside catch a direct view toward the cathedral's flank.

Order the Negroni or an Americano during aperitivo, which runs from 6pm with snacks accompanying the drinks through the early evening. Cocktails sit in the 12 to 16 euro range, fair for the block given the address. The alcohol-free Negroni is a genuine option here, not an afterthought.

The bar opens daily from 11am to 1am, which makes it a useful all-day room: coffee and a laptop at noon, aperitivo at six, and a late drink when the independent bars nearby have filled. Spotted by Locals calls it the unexpected cool spot of the Duomo block, and the late hours are a large part of why.

Who it is for: design-minded travelers staying central, an after-shopping pause from the Galleria, and a first or last drink around a dinner in the centro. Skip it if the night calls for serious mixology; that is what Navigli and Isola are for.

Best time to go is the 6pm aperitivo hour, when the fashion crowd drifts in and the room runs at full character. After 10pm on weekends the DJ takes over and conversation moves to the outdoor seats.

The location-to-quality ratio is the differentiator. Almost everything else within sight of the Duomo trades on the address; Straf Bar would hold a crowd in a quieter district too. See where it sits in our best cocktail bars in Milan ranking, or start the evening with the Milan after-work guide.
