Founded in 1892 across from the University and the National Library, the Bar of Students has poured for presidents, poets, and five generations of Montevideo.
Gran Sportman opened in 1892 at the corner of Avenida 18 de Julio and Tristán Narvaja in Cordón, directly across from the University of the Republic and the National Library. The position earned it the nickname Bar of Students, and View Montevideo's survey of the city's notable bars ranks it among the most emblematic survivors.
The guest book reads like a national archive: president José Batlle y Ordóñez, writers Felisberto Hernández and Mario Benedetti, and Jorge Luis Borges on his Montevideo visits, per the Benedetti mapping project miradabenedetti.uy. The original building came down in 1979, and the bar reopened in the 1981 replacement without losing the corner.
Who would hate it? Cocktail hunters. This is coffee, beer, and conversation, in that order.
