Our Take on L'Oca Nera Irish Pub
A block off Piazza Vanvitelli, where the funicular from Piazza Fuga empties the evening crowd onto the Vomero hill, a black goose sign hangs over Via Bernini 17. Fanpage Napoli calls L'Oca Nera one of the best pubs in Naples and a true institution of the quarter, busiest on Saturday nights when the wooden room runs out of chairs.
The pub plays both of its nationalities. The taps pour Guinness, Kilkenny, and a rotating cast of Italian and Belgian craft, the credo on the wall reads life is too short to drink bad beers per Petit Fute, and the kitchen grills chianina beef burgers that Fanpage names the most famous plate on the street.
There is no wifi, and that is policy. The house wants the table talking, with Serie A on the screens when Napoli play.
Reading the Room
Wood tables, wood chairs, and portraits of historical faces on the walls give the room its northern European grammar, transplanted to the most Neapolitan hill in the city. The bar counter seats the solo drinkers and the early arrivals.
Match nights rearrange everything. When Napoli play, the screens take over and the room turns into Vomero's living room.
The Menu, Edited
Who Shows Up, and When
Weeknights hold a steady Vomero crowd of students, couples, and groups working through the menu. Saturday is the crush, with the room full by 9pm and the kitchen running flat out.
Foursquare logs 245 visitors' tips for the room, most circling the same advice: come early, order the burger, stay for the cake.
