Cocktails as Medicine on Doyers Street
Apothèke is hidden on Doyers Street, the curved alley in Chinatown that was the most violent block in late-19th-century New York. The bar is styled as a Victorian apothecary, with white tile walls, marble counters, glass dispensary jars, and bartenders in white lab coats. The menu is organized as a doctor's prescription pad.
The cocktails follow medicinal categories — Aphrodisiacs, Stress Relievers, Health and Beauty, Pain Killers, Stimulants, Hallucinogens, Euphoric Enhancers. The drinks are theatrical and use fresh herbs, spices, and unusual ingredients. The presentation is part of the experience.
The crowd is mid-thirties travellers and themed-bar enthusiasts. Best for a single themed evening. Pair with the wider NYC speakeasy scene for a hidden-bars Manhattan crawl.
