Our Take on The Ear Inn

The Ear Inn at 326 Spring Street is one of the oldest operating bars in New York City. The building dates to around 1817, the bar has been running since the Prohibition era, and the sign outside — the 'B' in the old BAR neon partially obscured to read EAR — is one of the more quietly brilliant pieces of branding in the city's history.

This is not a cocktail bar. The beer taps run to around a dozen reliable options, the bar food runs to burgers and bar snacks, and the service style is uncomplicated and direct. What makes The Ear Inn worth knowing about is the combination of genuine history, no pretension, reasonable prices by Manhattan standards, and the back garden — which in spring and summer becomes one of the most pleasant outdoor drinking spots in SoHo. Cash only, which remains the policy and feels right.

The regulars are an interesting mix of local artists, waterfront workers from the Hudson Street area, and people who have been coming for 20 or 30 years. The bar feels like it belongs to all of them equally, which is increasingly rare in this part of Manhattan. For the hidden gems in New York that we recommend to people who want something that feels genuinely local rather than crafted to look local, The Ear Inn is always on the list. See also Attaboy for a very different but equally authentic experience, and the New York bar guide for the full city overview. The Please Don't Tell on St Marks Place offers reservations-required intensity by contrast.

The bar feels like it belongs to all of them equally, which is increasingly rare in this part of Manhattan.

What to Order

Draft Beer

Whatever is freshest on tap. Ask which keg was changed most recently and go with that.

House Burger

Simple, well-made, arrives fast. Order it if you are planning on staying more than one drink.

Whiskey Neat

A well pour that does not require overthinking. The Ear Inn is not the place to agonise over a whisky list.

Seasonal Ale

The taps rotate with the season. A craft ale in autumn, a lighter lager in summer. Ask what is seasonal.

Best Time to Visit

Saturday or Sunday afternoon for the back garden (weather dependent). Weekday evenings for the most relaxed bar service. Late on a Friday after midnight when it fills with the kind of crowd that knows not to go anywhere louder.
