The Pitch

What Le Bar des Oiseaux Is

Le Bar des Oiseaux keeps the name of one of Vieux Nice's storied bars and runs it as a bistro with a Michelin Guide listing. The current room at 5 rue Saint Vincent dates to 2014; the pop art walls and the birds in the name go back much further in old town memory.

Gault and Millau reviews the kitchen. Restaurant Guru holds it at 4.5 across 2,902 reviews. The Michelin Guide gives it the black knife and fork, which for a room this size in this quarter is the whole headline.

One correction worth making upfront: despite the name, this is not a drinking bar. Come for the table, drink Provencal wine with it, and do not arrive expecting a beer list.

The Room

Reading the Room

A small dining room dressed in pop art and eclectic ornament, the kind of decor that reads cluttered in photos and correct in person. O'Bon Paris calls it one of the old town's defining rooms.

It fills fast at both services. The square footage is the bottleneck, not the demand.

The Drinks

The Menu, Edited

01
Provencal wine by the glass
The list stays local and reasonable. A glass of Bellet with the ravioli is the textbook Vieux Nice order.
02
The homemade ravioli
The kitchen's calling card, flagged across Tripadvisor and Gault and Millau alike. Plates run creative rather than rustic.
03
A pastis before the plates
The one concession to the bar in the name. Take it standing if the table is not ready.
The Crowd

Who Shows Up, and When

Locals at lunch, a mixed dining crowd at night, and enough Michelin pilgrims to make booking sensible. The room turns calm and conversational; nobody is here to be seen.

Budget around 50 to 60 euros a head with wine. Portions run measured, which is the most repeated quibble in reviews.

Who It Is For

Practical

Before You Go

Rue Saint Vincent sits in the quiet grid of Vieux Nice, three minutes from the cathedral tram stop. Book for dinner; lunch walk ins fare better.

Off season the room trims its early week service. Check the day before crossing town.
