Palizzi Social Club is technically a private members' club at 1915 East Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia, operating out of what was once a genuine Italian-American social club. Membership costs $20 for a lifetime card, but walk-ins are accepted if a member vouches for you at the door.
The bar is run by chef Joey Baldino of Zeppoli and Cicala fame, and the menu is a pure expression of Italian-American eating and drinking. The cocktail programme leans heavily into amaro, Italian spirits, and anything that pairs well with a plate of meatballs.
"Go on a Wednesday evening, arrive with patience, and tell whoever answers the door that you are a serious person. The food is exceptional, and the peppers and eggs sandwich is legendary."
The wine list is short, natural, and intelligently chosen. The space is small, deliberately unchanging, and impossible to book in advance. Walk-in service is the way this place operates, which means you need to arrive ready for the unexpected.
What makes Palizzi work is its absolute refusal to compromise on what it believes a neighbourhood bar should be. There is no Instagram-friendly decor, no craft cocktail theatrics, no photogenic plating on the snacks. What you find instead is community, serious spirit knowledge, and food that tastes like it belongs in someone's house in South Philly.
The bartenders know their regulars by name and their drink orders by memory. The regulars know the owner. The owner knows what he's doing. This is the kind of establishment that Philadelphia does better than most American cities: a place where the bar serves the neighbourhood rather than trying to impress the internet.
