Expatriate, Portland

Expatriate is the kind of bar you tell people about quietly, half-hoping they will not actually go. It occupies a small converted house on NE 30th Avenue in Beaumont-Wilshire — a residential neighbourhood that has no particular reason to have one of Portland's finest cocktail bars, except that Portland is Portland and sometimes that is explanation enough.

Kyle Webster, who built the bar's reputation, draws on East Asian flavour profiles in a way that feels earned rather than trend-chasing. Shiso, yuzu, chrysanthemum tea, black sesame, dashi: these are not decorations but integral components in drinks that hold up as classics on their own terms. The bar programme pairs with a small menu of snacks that are, taken individually, among the best things to eat at a bar counter in this city.

"Expatriate draws on East Asian flavour profiles in a way that feels earned rather than trend-chasing. This is one of the most considered bars in Portland."

The room holds 40 people comfortably. It feels intimate rather than cramped — low lighting, close tables, a bar counter that invites extended conversation. On weeknights it is peaceful. On Friday and Saturday it fills by 8pm and the energy shifts. Both versions are worth experiencing.

The food: order the rice crackers with furikake butter immediately upon sitting down. Then decide about cocktails. The drinks are best approached in the same spirit — trust the bartender, ask questions, try things you would not usually order. Expatriate rewards curiosity more than most places.

What to Order at Expatriate

Shiso Highball
Japanese whisky, shiso cordial, sparkling water, yuzu zest. Aromatic and clean. One of the best highballs on the West Coast, full stop.
Chrysanthemum Negroni
Portland gin, chrysanthemum-infused Campari, dry vermouth. Floral and bitter in equal measure. A house classic that does not appear everywhere despite being brilliant.
Black Sesame Flip
Aged rum, black sesame orgeat, egg, lemon. Rich, nutty, smooth. One of the few flips that justifies its own existence every time it is poured.
Best Time to Visit

Wednesday or Thursday, arriving at 6pm. The bar is quiet, the bartenders have time, and you can usually get a seat at the counter without waiting. Friday and Saturday are lively and worth it, but plan to arrive early. Read more about Portland's hidden gem bar scene before your visit.
