Our Take
Our Take on Prost!
Portland has more craft beer bars than almost any city its size in the world, but Prost! occupies a different lane. Rather than showcasing the local Pacific Northwest brewing scene, this North Mississippi Avenue institution imports the Bavarian beer hall experience wholesale and executes it with genuine conviction. Ten rotating German draught taps, proper half-litre and litre steins imported from Germany, and a Biergarten that becomes one of the best outdoor drinking spots in the city the moment Portland's sun appears.
The building is a converted Victorian house with a warm, wood-heavy interior that conjures a Munich neighbourhood Gasthaus more convincingly than it has any right to. The noise level is jovial and sociable without being overwhelming. Communal seating encourages the kind of conversation with strangers that German beer culture was built around. The staff understand the difference between a Kellerbier and a Dunkel and will help you choose if you ask.
Prost! represents a specific kind of Portland bar: proudly independent, deeply knowledgeable about its chosen territory, and resistant to trends that have nothing to do with what it is trying to do. In a city full of excellent craft beer bars, this one stands apart by going entirely its own way. The pretzels are also excellent.
What to Order
Rotating German Draught
10 taps of imported German beer turn over regularly. Expect Kellerbiers, Dunkels, Weizens, and Pilsners from smaller Bavarian breweries rarely found elsewhere in Portland. Ask the bartender what arrived this week.
Mass (Litre Stein)
The full litre served in an authentic German ceramic stein is the correct way to drink here. Heavier than it looks, colder than expected, and enormously satisfying. This is the authentic experience.
Weissbier
Bavarian Hefeweizen poured properly: tall glass, swirl to rouse the yeast, gentle pour. Banana and clove aromatics with a full, satisfying body. One of the most food-friendly beers in existence, and excellent with the pretzel.
Pretzel with Beer Cheese
A large, freshly baked Laugenbrezel served with house-made obatzda cheese spread. The right food pairing for a German beer hall. Order it first, let it arrive with the beer, and settle in.
Best Time to Visit
Summer weekend afternoons in the Biergarten from 1pm to 4pm represent Prost! at its finest: the garden fills with locals, the sun cooperates, and the session beers flow at a civilised pace. Winter evenings inside the Victorian house from 6pm onward have a different but equally satisfying character, the warm interior and full steins providing effective insulation against Portland's grey season.
Who It Is For
German beer enthusiasts looking for something beyond the standard Pacific Northwest IPA. Groups who want communal seating and a convivial atmosphere without having to shout. Visitors to North Mississippi Avenue who have already worked through the neighbourhood's other excellent options. Anyone who has ever stood in a Munich Biergarten and wished they could find something similar at home. Also excellent for after-work drinks with a group who cannot agree on what to drink, because Prost! makes the decision easy.
