Rum Club is the kind of bar Portland does better than almost anywhere else in America: a serious cocktail programme in an unpretentious room, priced in a way that lets you order a second round without feeling it. It sits on SE Sandy Boulevard in Buckman, a stretch of road most tourists never find, and that is precisely the point.
The bar is the creation of veterans who built a place they actually wanted to drink in. The back bar runs to 80 rums and counting — aged agricoles from Martinique, pot still Jamaicans, solera-aged Spanish rums, single-cask Barbados — but the cocktail menu moves fluently through every base spirit. The Daiquiri comes out perfectly balanced, the highest compliment you can pay a cocktail programme.
"The Daiquiri here is the standard against which every other in Portland is measured. Three ingredients, perfect balance, no theatrics."
The room is small — 16 stools at the bar, a handful of tables near the door — and fills quickly on weekends. Come mid-week when you can actually talk to the bartenders, ask about the rum list, and possibly end up with something from the shelf that does not appear on the printed menu. The team is approachable and clearly proud of what they have assembled.
One other thing worth mentioning: the vinyl. Rum Club is one of the few serious cocktail bars in Portland where the music is genuinely good. The team rotates records from the house collection, no algorithm involved. If you find yourself wondering who chose this particular record at this volume, the answer is whoever is behind the bar that night.
Wednesday or Thursday evening. The bar fills on weekends and the energy shifts accordingly. Mid-week, the bartenders have time to talk through the rum list — which, at 80 bottles, merits proper conversation. The hidden gem bar scene in Portland rewards those who show up before Friday.
