Bar Urca

Bar Urca is exactly what Rio does better than any other city: the unpretentious neighbourhood bar that happens to sit beside one of the most beautiful views in the world. The Urca neighbourhood is a preserved residential enclave between Sugarloaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay, and it exists in a different time from the rest of Rio. Bar Urca has occupied the same strip of seawall since 1952, watching the city change from a distance without changing itself in response.

At lunchtime, locals sit on the seawall with cold chopp and petiscos, feet dangling above the water. The bar itself is small. Four tables indoors, the rest on the street. The menu never changes and it does not need to: grilled shrimp skewers, pasteis de camarao, bolinhos de bacalhau, and very cold draft beer at prices that embarrass the tourist traps in Ipanema and Leblon. The quality is steady. The portions are generous. The bartenders have worked here long enough that they remember their customers not just from yesterday but from decades ago. Go on a weekday afternoon for the full effect, when the working-class lunch crowd that has been eating here for 30 and 40 years fills every seat on the wall. This is the bar's best feature and the reason it has survived while so much else has not.

The Bar do Mineiro in Lapa offers a similar unpretentious neighbourhood spirit, and the rooftop bars offer views that compete with Bar Urca's vantage point. But nowhere else in Rio captures both the social reality of the city and the physical beauty with such ease. No Instagram. No signage beyond a basic logo. Just work, drink, eat, and sit on the water.
