Our Take on Born and Raised

No bar in San Diego commands a room like Born and Raised. The three-floor building in Little Italy was designed with the architectural ambition of a five-star hotel — marble, dark walnut, leather banquettes, and pendant lighting that keeps the whole operation in a flattering amber glow. The 1940s steakhouse aesthetic is total and convincing. You feel, from the moment you enter the ground floor, that you have walked into a different era.

The bar program operates across all three floors, each with a distinct character. The ground floor bar is for serious cocktails — quieter, more considered, with 40 seats along the long bar and an intimate back room reserved for the most attentive service. The rooftop is where the energy goes in the evenings, with views across Little Italy to the bay that, on a clear San Diego evening, are genuinely hard to improve upon. The middle floor is the dining room, where the bar extends into proper table service territory.

The cocktail list draws from the same 1940s influence as the room. The Old Pal — rye whiskey, Campari, dry vermouth — is crisp and properly bitter. The Martinez is made with Old Tom gin and sweet vermouth in the original proportions. The seasonal punch bowls, served for two or four, arrive in cut crystal with theatrical ice and are among the most visually impressive drinks in the city.

"Three floors, views across the bay, and cocktails that match the room's ambition. Born and Raised is the bar San Diego needed for special occasions."

Best visited for a date night or a special occasion where the setting is part of what you are celebrating. The San Diego rooftop bar scene has few competitors at this level. For the wider San Diego bar guide, this sits at the top of the cocktail category — alongside Noble Experiment as the two most ambitious bar programs in the city. The best date night bars in San Diego consistently starts here.

What to Order

The Editors' Picks

The Old Pal
Rittenhouse Rye, Campari, Noilly Prat Dry Vermouth. Equal parts, stir, strain into a chilled coupe. The bartenders here understand that this drink lives or dies on temperature.
$19
Seasonal Punch Bowl
Served for 2 or 4 guests in cut crystal, the punch changes quarterly. The current version is always listed on the menu — always order it if a large format applies.
$48–$88
The Martinez
Hayman's Old Tom Gin, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, Maraschino Liqueur, Angostura Bitters. The cocktail that preceded the Martini, served as it was originally intended.
$20
Rooftop Negroni
Plymouth Gin, Campari, Cinzano Rosso, served over a large format ice block with an expressed orange peel. Best ordered with a view of the bay at sunset.
$18
Steak and Whiskey Pairing
Ask the bar team for the current whiskey pairing with the dry-aged selection. A 12-year bourbon alongside a slice of wagyu from the dining room is one of the better combinations in San Diego.
Market price
Champagne Cart Selection
The rooftop bar operates a Champagne and sparkling cart on Friday and Saturday evenings. The grower Champagne selections change regularly and represent serious value.
$18–$35 per glass
