Our Take on Horsefeather
Horsefeather opened quietly on Divisadero and built a following through word of mouth and genuine quality. The room is narrow and beautifully lit: warm amber, exposed wood, and the kind of candlelight that makes everyone look like they are in a film. It seats around 40 people, which is exactly the right size for a bar that wants to do everything properly.
The cocktail program focuses on California spirits and seasonal ingredients, which sounds like a formula but in practice produces drinks that feel genuinely local rather than generically artisanal. The Amaro selection is one of the better ones in the city. The food menu is small and good: the kind of snacks that pair well with drinks rather than competing with them.
For date night bars in San Francisco, Horsefeather is our first recommendation. The room is intimate without being claustrophobic, the noise level permits conversation, and the drinks give you something to discuss. Make a reservation for Friday or Saturday. Walk in on a Tuesday or Wednesday and you will likely get a seat. See the full San Francisco bar guide for more across all occasions.
What to Order
01
The Seasonal Stirred Cocktail
Horsefeather's stirred cocktail section changes quarterly and tends toward whiskey, amaro, and fortified wine combinations. Order whatever is current. The team builds these to last the season, which means they are always refined by the time you taste them.
02
The Amaro Selection
One of San Francisco's better Amaro lists, with Italian, American, and South American expressions. Ask for a recommendation based on how bitter you want to go. The staff know the range well.
03
The House Sour
Changes with the seasons. The citrus is always freshly squeezed and the egg white is always properly dry-shaken. A reliable choice if you want something bright and accessible while you decide what to order next.
04
The Bartender's Pick
Tell them your spirit preference and whether you want something light or complex. Horsefeather's bartenders are attentive and will build something specifically for you. This is always the right move at a bar of this caliber.
Best Time to Visit
Tuesday through Thursday evenings are best for a quiet, unrushed experience. The bar fills after 8pm on weekends and reservations become essential. Horsefeather pairs well with dinner beforehand at one of the Divisadero corridor restaurants, followed by cocktails here as the evening deepens. Check the San Francisco cocktail bar guide if you want to build a longer evening.
