Our Take on Bar Brahma
There is no bar in São Paulo that carries the weight of history quite like Bar Brahma. Since opening on Avenida São João in 1948, it has outlasted governments, economic crises, and the city's relentless churn of fashion. Politicians, artists, writers, and football fans have all pulled up a stool at this corner counter. The Art Deco facade with its glowing amber neon is one of the city's most photographed exteriors.
Inside, the room is exactly what you want from a Brazilian institution: tiled floors, dark wood panelling, ceiling fans slowly turning, and the smell of cold draft beer. The bar anchors one side of the room; the stage sits at the other. Every Thursday through Saturday, choro bands perform live, keeping alive a tradition that has played here for seven decades. The sound is acoustic, intricate, and unmistakably paulistano.
Order the Brahma draft on arrival. It arrives in a frozen glass that will be colder than anything you have ordered at a craft beer bar in three years. Follow it with a caipirinha made tableside, then dive into the petiscos menu. The linguica and the coxinha are non-negotiable. The editors recommend Thursday nights for the quieter crowd; Saturday draws everyone and the energy shifts from cultural to celebratory in the best possible way.
What to Order
Know Before You Go
Bar Brahma sits on the corner of Avenida São João and Avenida Ipiranga, a crossing made famous in the Caetano Veloso song "Sampa." The address puts you in the heart of the old city centre, which is worth exploring before or after. The neighbourhood has been in various states of regeneration; arrive by 6pm when it is most animated.
The bar does not take reservations for the main floor. Groups of more than eight may want to book the private dining room. Thursday nights are the editors' choice for the live choro sessions, which begin at 9pm and run until midnight. On weekends, the room fills quickly after 8pm. If you want a counter seat, arrive before 7pm. Dress code is casual, though the room itself is formal enough that shorts feel slightly out of place. Smart casual is the right call.
São Paulo's bar scene extends well beyond the centre. For cocktail bars in the Pinheiros neighbourhood, see our guides to Sub Astor and the best cocktail bars in São Paulo. For an evening that starts here and ends in Vila Madalena, pair Bar Brahma with Veloso for the second stop.
