Filial arrived in Vila Madalena at the moment São Paulo's wine culture was shifting from imported Malbec consumed without conversation to something considerably more curious. The bar's natural wine list covers small producers from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Europe, selected with a coherence that suggests a serious programme rather than a shopping list. The staff know every bottle and will tell you why it is there if you give them a reason to.

The room is intimate without being cramped: around 40 seats across the main floor and a small terrace that fills first on warm evenings. The light is warm. Filial takes reservations and the editors recommend booking for weekend evenings. The terrace fills early and does not free up.
