Our Take on Bodega Santa Cruz

Where Calle Mateos Gago bends toward the Giralda, on the corner of Rodrigo Caro, Bodega Santa Cruz opens at 8:30 in the morning and does not pause until midnight. Everyone in Seville calls it Las Columnas, after the columns flanking the bar. The Cathedral tower is visible from the doorway.

This is the loud, cheap, standing end of Santa Cruz drinking, and proudly so. Orders shout across the counter, tapas arrive in seconds, and the barman chalks your running tab directly onto the wooden bar top, a system Azahar Sevilla Tapas calls a vanishing Seville tradition.

Foursquare counts more than 4,000 logged visitors and 272 tips for this one corner room. The prices explain it: most tapas hold near 2 euros.

The Room

Reading the Room

Two columns, a packed counter, barrels for tables, and a floor of napkins by 10pm. Air conditioning is the open door. The crowd spills onto the corner with beer and montaditos in hand, and standing outside with the Giralda lit above counts as the best seat in the quarter.

The Drinks

The Menu, Edited

01
A Cana and a Montadito
Small cold beer, small filled roll, about 4 euros for both. The pringa montadito, slow-cooked meat, is the house order.
02
Cold Sherry From the Barrel
Manzanilla and fino move fast here. Ask for it muy fria and it arrives properly cold.
03
Round Two, Chalked Up
Nobody pays per round. The chalk tally on the bar settles at the end, on trust.
The Crowd

Who Shows Up, and When

Mornings bring coffee regulars, afternoons the post-Cathedral tourist wave, and after 9pm the bar belongs to students and locals standing two-deep at the counter.

Yelp's 180 reviewers split between loving the chaos and warning about it. Both are right.
