The Naked Finn at Gillman Barracks is the city's seafood-and-beer institution. The kitchen does single-ingredient seafood (whole grilled fish, a half-dozen oysters, a kilogram of mussels) and the bar runs a small but unusually serious beer programme that pairs to the kitchen better than most.

Our Take on The Naked Finn
Six taps and a careful bottle list. The taps tend to stay on for a few weeks — the lineup is not aggressive rotation but rather a careful selection of beers that suit the kitchen. The Hofbräu Original — a Munich-brewed lager — has been on tap continuously since the bar opened and pairs as well as any beer in the city with the kitchen's grilled fish.
The bottle list runs to Belgian saisons, German weissbiers, English real ales, and a small Asian craft selection. The staff recommend pairings unprompted and the recommendations are accurate; the saison-and-oysters pairing in particular is the kind of thing that justifies the kitchen's prices.
The Naked Finn is not a beer destination first — it is a seafood destination with serious beer. But for a long Sunday lunch with a careful drinking pace, the format is hard to better. Walk in early; the room fills by 1pm on weekends.
Best time to visit: Weekday evenings before 9pm for the quieter version of the room; weekends after 9pm for the busier one. Reservations recommended where the bar accepts them.
