Hobgoblin is the rare Tokyo pub with a brewery in its name and a reason for it: the chain grew out of Wychwood's Hobgoblin ale, and the Shibuya branch pours it two minutes from the busiest crossing on earth.
The room sits on the third floor of the Ichiban Building at 1-3-11 Dogenzaka, a 193 meter walk from Shibuya Station by Tokyo Cheapo's measurement, which in Shibuya terms means you can leave the scramble crossing and be holding a pint before the next light change. It is the third Tokyo outpost of the Hobgoblin group, which also runs rooms in Roppongi and Akasaka, and it carries the group's defining contract with its regulars: honest bar food, a solid draft list, and, as Time Out Tokyo puts it, the best sports events practically always available for viewing.
The room
A proper British pub layout rather than a Japanese reinterpretation of one. Dark wood, a long bar, screens placed where a crowd can actually gather, and staff who all speak English, which on a Champions League night matters more than the decor. The third-floor setting filters out the casual Dogenzaka foot traffic; the people who climb the stairs came for the match or the ale, and usually both.
What to order
Hobgoblin ale is the house signature and the historically correct first round. The ruby ale was first brewed at Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire, in the late 1980s, and the Tokyo pubs were built around importing it properly. Beyond that, the draft list covers familiar British and Japanese standards, and the kitchen does the pub canon: fish and chips, burgers, and a roster of plates built for halftime rather than haute cuisine.
Who it is for
Premier League and Six Nations watchers who want Shibuya convenience without a club soundtrack. Ale drinkers stranded in a city of lagers. Groups mixing sports fans and non-fans, since the pub works as a plain good pub when nothing is on. If you want forty taps of Japanese craft instead, Good Beer Faucets is a short walk up the same hill.
Best time to go
Weekend afternoons for relaxed viewing, early evenings for after-work pints before the big kickoffs. For marquee fixtures shown late Tokyo time, call ahead on 03-6415-4244 to confirm the screening and the branch's hours for that night. The chain posts match schedules on its official site.
