Our Take

Our Take on Mockingbird Hill

Mockingbird Hill opened in Shaw's 7th Street corridor as a deliberate argument: that sherry deserved its own bar, its own serious treatment, and an audience that went beyond the tapas restaurants where it had been relegated to a footnote on the menu. The argument has been comprehensively won. This is now one of Washington DC's most acclaimed hidden gems and a mandatory stop for anyone curious about what Spanish wine culture looks like at its most expressive.

The list covers the full sherry spectrum, from the bone-dry, salty manzanillas of Sanlucar to the oxidised, nutty grandeur of old amontillado and the rich sweetness of Pedro Ximenez. The staff know the bodegas, the harvest years, and the differences between producers — the kind of knowledge that transforms a glass of wine into a story. The small plates are built to pair: jamón, anchovies, aged cheeses, and seasonal preparations that understand how sherry interacts with food.

We rank this alongside Columbia Room and The Gibson as one of the three essential DC bars. The wine list also includes other Andalucian fortified wines, so there is genuine range even for guests who arrive thinking they do not like sherry. They usually leave converted. Mockingbird Hill is the kind of bar that changes how you drink.

What to Order
Manzanilla Pasada
A manzanilla that has been aged for longer than standard, developing depth while retaining the signature saline character of Sanlucar. This is the drink that converts sceptics. Order it cold, in a proper copita, with a slice of jamón ibérico on the side.
Old Amontillado
An aged amontillado from one of the bar's featured bodegas, showing hazelnut, dried citrus peel, and a dry, contemplative finish. This is a meditation in a glass. Order it at the bar, not the table, and take your time with it.
The Sherry Flight
Three pours chosen by the bar team — typically a dry Fino, a mid-weight Amontillado, and a richer Oloroso. This is the best way to understand the range on a first visit and takes about 45 minutes to work through properly.
Best Time to Visit
A Tuesday or Wednesday evening at opening, before the bar fills. Friday evenings are lively but the bar is small — arrive before 7pm or expect a wait for seating.
Who It Is For
Wine lovers willing to go beyond their usual repertoire, first-date visits that want somewhere genuinely different, and anyone who has eaten at a great Spanish restaurant and wanted more depth in the wine list.
