Oslo's relationship with rooftop drinking is seasonal in a way that no Mediterranean city can match. From May through September, the city transforms. Rooftop spaces open, waterfront decks fill with people who spend the rest of the year drinking inside, and the long Nordic evenings make a cold drink at altitude a genuinely transcendent experience. The fjord views are real, not backdrop images. The sky stays light until 23:00 in midsummer.
The tradeoff is that the season is short. Most of Oslo's rooftop and outdoor bars operate from late April through early October; some run shorter windows. We have included opening month information for each venue on this list so you can plan accordingly. All 7 bars were visited during the 2025 season.
Seasonal note: Oslo's rooftop bars are predominantly seasonal. The majority operate from May through September. A small number have indoor heated spaces that extend the season into October and occasionally beyond.

Ekebergrestauranten Terrace
Kongsveien 15 · Ekeberg · May–Sept: Daily 11:00–22:00 · $$$
Perched on the Ekeberg hillside above the city, this terrace bar sits inside a 1929 Art Deco restaurant that overlooks the Oslo fjord and the city's full skyline. On a clear evening, you can see the Oslofjord stretching south toward Drammen while the sun drops behind Holmenkollen. The cocktail list is seasonal and well-executed; the wine programme is one of the more serious in the city. Book in advance for weekend evenings: the terrace holds only 80 people and fills quickly in high summer. The restaurant behind it is worth considering for dinner if the budget allows.

Vingen Rooftop at Amerikalinjen
Jernbanetorget 2 · Sentrum · May–Sept: Tue–Sat 15:00–23:00 · $$$
The rooftop bar at Hotel Amerikalinjen sits on top of a former emigration hall, giving it both history and one of Oslo's most impressive city views. The building's connection to the mass emigrations of the late 19th century adds a layer of resonance to an already elegant space. The bar programme focuses on Scandinavian spirits and seasonal cocktails; the natural wine selection is thoughtfully chosen. Tuesday through Thursday evenings are the most relaxed option; weekends attract a fuller crowd and a waiting time for bar seats.

Bar Bocca Waterfront Deck
Stranden 3 · Aker Brygge · Apr–Oct: Daily 11:00–00:00 · $$$
Aker Brygge's most serious cocktail venue extends onto a waterfront deck in summer that places your drink directly adjacent to the Oslo fjord. The view is not an elevated rooftop panorama but a horizontal one: boats, water, the Akershus Fortress across the bay. The cocktail programme maintains the same quality as the interior bar, with Italian aperitivo influence and a Negroni selection that is genuinely worth pausing for. For
rooftop and outdoor bars in Oslo, the Aker Brygge waterfront is the most accessible option, particularly for visitors staying in the central hotel district.

Frau Haugans Summer Terrace
Kvadraturen area · Sentrum · May–Aug: Daily 12:00–22:00 · $$
A neighbourhood terrace that operates on the logic of a well-run beer garden: simple drinks done well, good food, and enough space to accommodate a crowd without losing the informal character that makes it worth visiting. The beer list runs primarily Norwegian craft, with 12 taps rotating through seasonal releases from Haandbryggeriet, Lervig, and smaller producers. The wine selection is brief but well-chosen. In July and early August, the evening light here runs until 23:00, which creates a particular quality of outdoor drinking that Oslo's latitude makes uniquely available.

Vulkan Arena Rooftop
Maridalsveien 17 · Vulkan · Jun–Sept: Thu–Sat 18:00–02:00 · $$
The Vulkan neighbourhood, Oslo's creative and food-focused development along the Akerselva, includes a rooftop space above the Vulkan Arena that operates as a seasonal cocktail bar on concert and event nights. The views across the river to Grunerlokka are the most neighbourhood-level Oslo rooftop experience on this list: not fjord panoramas, but city texture. The cocktail programme is compact and consistent. Thursday evenings run a jazz programme that makes this the most musically interesting outdoor option in the city. Pair with dinner at Mathallen food hall below before heading up.

Oslo's outdoor season rewards early planning. The best waterfront and rooftop spots fill quickly from June onward, and weekend reservations at Ekebergrestauranten and Amerikalinjen should be made 2 to 3 weeks in advance during July and August. For comparison, the Stockholm rooftop bar guide and Copenhagen rooftop scene offer a Scandinavian context for what Norway's capital provides. The full Oslo bar guide covers the indoor scene across all seasons.

Sir Winston Terrace
Stranden 3 · Aker Brygge · Apr–Oct: Mon–Fri 16:00–00:00, Sat–Sun 14:00–01:00 · $$$
The exterior terrace of Sir Winston at Aker Brygge extends the bar's classic cocktail programme into the waterfront air. The seating is more formal than the casual waterfront approach at Bar Bocca next door, with proper table service and a menu of 22 cocktails. The classic builds are exceptional here: the house Martini uses a house-infused gin, and the Sazerac is one of the most accurately made in the city. For a
date night in Oslo that combines outdoor setting with serious cocktail quality, this is the obvious recommendation.

Pergola at Sommerro
Sommerrogata 1 · Frogner · Mar–Oct: Daily 11:00–23:00 · $$$$
The Sommerro hotel, opened in 2022 in a converted 1930s art deco power station in the Frogner district, runs a rooftop pergola bar that operates across an extended season with a heated cover. The cocktail programme is the most ambitious on this list: 28 drinks organised by flavour profile, with a focus on aquavit-based builds using Norwegian botanical ingredients. The rooftop pool (accessible to hotel guests only) and the pergola bar create one of Oslo's most complete luxury outdoor experiences. Prices reflect the setting. Worth it at least once.

When to Visit Oslo's Rooftop Bars
The optimal window for Oslo rooftop drinking is June through August, when temperatures reliably support outdoor evenings and the midnight sun creates 22 hours of usable daylight. The summer solstice around June 21 is the peak: the sky barely darkens, the city stays out late, and every rooftop and waterfront space operates at full capacity. Book in advance if visiting during this window.
May and September offer a quieter version of the same experience, with cooler evenings and less competition for the best spots. The Ekebergrestauranten terrace and Sommerro pergola both extend their seasons into these months. October rooftop drinking in Oslo requires proper clothing and a tolerance for cold, but the autumn light across the fjord has a particular beauty that summer crowds never see.
