The 9 Best Bars in Washington DC 2026

Washington drinks earlier and more seriously than its buttoned-up image suggests. These nine run from political-class hotel bars to award-winning cocktail dens, a deep whiskey saloon and a Shaw brewpub, most of them walkable from one another. We checked each against current listings and venue records in June 2026 and kept only the rooms still trading.

The 9 best bars in Washington DC

  1. 01

    Columbia Room

Columbia Room hides down Blagden Alley in Shaw, Derek Brown's tasting-menu bar that won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program. Choose the Spirits Library for walk-in drinks or book the Tasting Room for a guided flight. Order the multi-course pairing if you have the evening. Best for a special occasion, booked ahead. For drinkers who want DC's most decorated cocktail room.

  2. 02

    The Gibson

The Gibson off 14th Street was DC's first modern speakeasy, an unmarked door into a dim, low-ceilinged room with a strict seating policy. The cocktails are classic and exact, the lighting deliberately low. Order off the bartender's list and respect the no-standing rule. Best early on a weeknight before the wait builds. For drinkers who want the city's original hidden bar.

  3. 03

    Off The Record

Off The Record sits in the basement of the Hay-Adams hotel across from the White House, a red-leather room famous for caricature coasters of political figures. The drinks are classic and the crowd skews powerful. Order a martini and read the walls. Best early evening when lobbyists and staffers fill the booths. For drinkers who want Washington's insider hotel bar.

  4. 04

    Round Robin Bar

The Round Robin Bar inside the Willard InterContinental is a circular, green-walled room where the mint julep became a Washington ritual, poured here since Henry Clay's day. The bartenders trade in history as much as cocktails. Order the julep, the house signature. Best for an early drink steeped in political lore. For drinkers who want the most storied bar in the capital.

  5. 05

    Jack Rose Dining Saloon

Jack Rose in Adams Morgan stacks one of America's deepest whiskey collections across a multi-level saloon, with thousands of bottles climbing the back wall on rolling ladders. There is a rooftop and a tiki bar too. Order a rare pour or build a flight. Best for a long evening of comparison drinking. For drinkers who came for the brown spirits.

  6. 06

    The Passenger

The Passenger in Shaw, from the Brown brothers, is a louder, looser cocktail bar where bartender's-choice drinks are the house specialty. Skip the menu and tell the bar what you like. The room runs busy and convivial. Order a dealer's choice and trust the team. Best later in the evening when it hits its stride. For drinkers who want serious cocktails without the hush.

  7. 07

    ChurchKey

ChurchKey above Birch and Barley on 14th Street runs around 50 taps and hundreds of bottles, one of DC's most ambitious beer lists. The room is dark, busy and built for grazing. Order a tasting flight and a plate of frites. Best midweek before the weekend crush. For drinkers who treat beer with the seriousness most rooms reserve for cocktails.

  8. 08

    Bidwell

Bidwell anchors Union Market with a bright, produce-driven bar and rooftop garden, John Mooney's restaurant where the cocktails lean fresh and seasonal. It is more dining room than den, but the bar holds its own. Order a garden-driven drink before a meal. Best for weekend brunch or an early evening. For drinkers who want a lighter, greener room than a speakeasy.

  9. 09

    Right Proper Brewing

Right Proper's Shaw brewpub pours its own beers in a high-ceilinged room with a mural nodding to the neighbourhood's jazz past. The house ales run from saisons to hoppy pours, and the kitchen keeps pace. Order a flight of the saisons. Best on a relaxed afternoon. For drinkers who want a local brewery taproom with character.

How DC drinks differently

Washington's best bars cluster by district. Shaw holds Columbia Room, The Passenger and Right Proper, while 14th Street lines up The Gibson and ChurchKey. The hotel classics, Off The Record and the Round Robin, sit downtown near the White House, Jack Rose anchors Adams Morgan, and Bidwell holds Union Market to the northeast. The city drinks early, with most cocktail rooms peaking between 8pm and 11pm.
