Top 10 Cities for Bar Scene Worldwide

We have spent three years sending editors to 72 cities, rating 3,600-plus bars, and arguing at length about which cities genuinely deserve the crown. This is not a list of the cities with the most awards or the most Instagram posts. This is a ranking based on one question: if you could drink in any city on earth for a week, where would you go and why?

The criteria are straightforward. Depth of offer matters — a city with 12 exceptional bars outranks one with 400 mediocre ones every time. Originality counts. Price-to-quality ratio factors in. And the culture surrounding the drink matters as much as the drink itself. With those principles in hand, here is where we landed.

10. Melbourne, Australia

9. Singapore

8. New Orleans, USA

7. Amsterdam, Netherlands

"The best bar cities are not the ones with the most awards. They are the ones where drinking feels like it belongs to the culture of the place."

6. Berlin, Germany

5. London, UK

The art of the cocktail — found at its finest in a handful of cities that truly invest in the craft.

4. Barcelona, Spain

3. New York City, USA

2. Tokyo, Japan

1. New Orleans — The Overall Winner

Every city on this list has a legitimate claim to the top. We could have ranked Tokyo first and no serious drinker would argue. But if the question is which city makes drinking feel most essentially and irreplaceably itself — where the culture of the bar is woven into the identity of the place in a way that cannot be imitated or exported — then New Orleans wins.

The Sazerac. The Ramos Gin Fizz. Preservation Hall Jazz Band drifting through the open door of a bar at 2am. A plastic cup of frozen daiquiri on Bourbon Street that somehow tastes right in context. The Faubourg Marigny. The Bywater. The Treme. New Orleans is not the most technically accomplished bar city on earth. It is the most alive.

For city-specific deep dives, our editors have spent significant time mapping New York's bar scene, London's endlessly layered pub and cocktail culture, and Tokyo's whisky and precision cocktail world. If you are planning a trip around drinking — and we think that is an entirely legitimate travel motivation — start with any of those three guides.
