What to Wear to Different Types of Bars

Knowing what to wear to a bar is not about fashion. It is about reading the room before you are in it. The wrong outfit at a cocktail bar will not get you turned away, but it will make you feel out of place, and that discomfort registers in how much you enjoy the evening. We have assembled the clearest dress code framework we can for every major bar type, based on 12 years of visiting bars across Europe, North America, and Asia.

Cocktail Bars: Smart Casual Is the Floor, Not the Ceiling

What to wear to a cocktail bar is the question we get most often, and the answer is: smart casual as your minimum. This means no gym wear, no flip flops, and no sports jerseys. Beyond that, there is significant range. A well-fitted dark shirt and good trousers works everywhere. A blazer takes you to the top tier. For women, a midi dress or smart separates. The rule is that if you would not wear it to a good restaurant, do not wear it to a serious cocktail bar.

Rooftop Bars: Dress for the Occasion, Not the Season

What to wear to a rooftop bar depends on the bar's position in the market. A hotel rooftop with city views enforces something close to cocktail bar standards. A casual neighbourhood rooftop with plastic chairs and a beer garden energy does not. The key variable is the view and the price point. If the bar has a Michelin-recommended hotel beneath it, dress as you would for a cocktail bar. If it is a converted warehouse rooftop in a creative neighbourhood, smart casual is enough. Always bring a layer. Rooftops are cold after 9pm regardless of season.

Sports Bars: Comfort Over Everything

What to wear to a sports bar is the simplest question in this guide. The answer is: whatever you are comfortable sitting in for three hours, able to move quickly in if the game demands a standing ovation, and will not mind having a drink spilled on during a celebration. Most sports bars have no dress code beyond shoes and a shirt. Team jerseys are actively welcome. The focus is the match, not the outfit.

Hidden Gem Bars: Read the Room Before You Arrive

Hidden gem bars resist a single dress code because they cover everything from neighbourhood pubs to unmarked speakeasies with jacket requirements. The rule here is to check the bar's Instagram or website before arriving. The photos will tell you more about the atmosphere and clientele than any written dress code. A speakeasy with pressed cocktails and leather banquettes will photograph very differently from a neighbourhood local with exposed brickwork and bar stools. Match your outfit to the photography, not to an assumed category.

Our Verdict: When in Doubt, Go Smarter

The universal rule for what to wear to a bar is this: if you are uncertain, dress one level smarter than you think is necessary. You can always remove a blazer. You cannot add one. Being the best-dressed person in a casual bar costs you nothing. Being underdressed in a smart bar changes how the staff and other guests perceive you for the entire evening, which is worth avoiding for the small effort of putting on better shoes.
