Best Craft Beer Bars in Cape Town

13 craft beer bars and taprooms, ranked by our editors. South Africa's most exciting brewing scene, from Salt River industrials to Sea Point tap houses.

  1. 01

    Devil's Peak Brewing Company

Salt River, CBD Fringe · $$

Cape Town's most decorated craft brewery, with a taproom that sets the standard for what this category can look like. The converted warehouse on the Salt River CBD fringe pours 18 taps covering everything from their flagship King's Blockhouse IPA to rotating seasonal experiments. The food truck courtyard runs Fridays and Saturdays. We recommend arriving before 18:00 on a Friday to secure a table in the courtyard before the after-work crowd descends from the CBD.

  2. 02

    Woodstock Brewery

    Albert Road, Woodstock · $$

The Woodstock creative district's local institution, operating out of a handsomely converted Victorian warehouse on Albert Road. The beer program balances approachable session ales with a more adventurous experimental range. The kitchen produces proper food rather than bar snacks, and the Sunday afternoon sessions are something of a neighbourhood institution. Dog-friendly throughout, and one of the few craft beer venues in Cape Town that genuinely welcomes families before 18:00.

  3. 03

    Drifter Brewing Company

Main Road, Sea Point · $$

The Atlantic Seaboard's finest craft beer destination, Drifter's Sea Point taphouse pours a focused lineup of 12 house-brewed taps. Their sour program is the best in the Western Cape, and the fruited kettle sours change monthly according to seasonal South African produce. The bar food is minimal but excellent. This is where Cape Town's serious beer drinkers come on weeknights when they want somewhere to sit and think properly about what they're drinking.

  4. 04

    Cape Brewing Company

Paarl, Winelands (45 min from CBD) · $$

Worth the drive out of the city to the Simondium wine estate that hosts Cape Brewing's full production facility and flagship taproom. The setting is extraordinary, mountains on three sides, vineyards on the fourth, and the beer quality is consistently among the best in the country. Combine with a Franschhoek wine lunch for a full day out. The lager and pilsner range here is exceptional: crisp, clean, and correctly conditioned in a way that takes real discipline to achieve.

  5. 05

    Beerhouse

Long Street, City Bowl · $$

99 taps across three floors, making this the highest tap-count venue in Southern Africa. The ground floor manages a respectable bar atmosphere despite the scale; the roof terrace is the place to be in summer. The beer selection covers local South African craft alongside international names, and the food menu runs to proper burgers and wings. For sheer variety, nothing in Cape Town comes close. The staff knowledge is good, and they'll happily walk you through a tasting flight.

  6. 06

    The Taproom at Observatory

Lower Main Road, Observatory · $

A committed local-only tap policy means every pour at this Observatory institution is from a South African independent brewery. The list changes weekly as new kegs arrive, and the chalkboard behind the bar is updated daily. This is the best place in Cape Town to discover emerging micro-breweries from the Western Cape interior before they make it to the wider city market. Prices are the lowest you'll find for this quality. Cash preferred, no food beyond bar snacks.

  7. 07

    Station Beer

Station Road, Salt River · $

One of the city's most interesting nano-brewery operations, Station Beer occupies a compact converted railway building and brews small batches on a system that produces roughly 500 litres per run. The result is a constantly shifting tap list where no two visits are quite the same. The session IPA and the unfiltered wit are mainstays; everything else is experimental. Worth following on social media before visiting to check what's currently pouring.

  8. 08

    Drayman's

Bree Street, City Bowl · $$

The Bree Street bar strip's dedicated craft beer outpost, Drayman's specialises in South African ales and stouts served at proper cellar temperature. The interior is more pub-like than most Cape Town craft venues, which is deliberate. The stout and porter selection is the best in the city centre. If you're in the Cape Town area exploring the broader bar scene, this is an ideal stop between cocktail bars.

  9. 09

    BrewDog Cape Town

    V&A Waterfront · $$

The Scottish craft beer chain's Cape Town outpost brings a consistency and range that makes it a reliable fallback when navigating the Waterfront area. The local integration is better than expected, with several South African guest taps alongside the BrewDog house range. The food matches the beer quality better than at many UK equivalents. Not the most adventurous choice in Cape Town, but reliably good.

  10. 10

    Barley and Bine

    Howard Centre, Pinelands · $

Cape Town's most comprehensive craft beer bottle shop and taproom hybrid. The retail wall stocks over 300 South African craft bottles and cans, and the 12-tap bar lets you drink in from the same selection. The staff know every brewery in the Western Cape personally. Worth visiting specifically to build a mixed case to take home. Located slightly off the tourist trail in Pinelands, which keeps prices honest and crowds manageable.

  11. 11

    Friar Tuck

Greenmarket Square, City Bowl · $

A City Bowl institution since 1987, Friar Tuck has quietly upgraded its tap selection over the past decade to become a genuine craft beer destination despite the traditional pub exterior. The 20 taps now include a solid rotation of Cape craft alongside the expected mainstream lines. Prices are among the best in the city centre, and the location on Greenmarket Square gives it a tourist-friendly accessibility without the tourist-facing pricing.

  12. 12

    Triggerfish Brewing

    R44, Somerset West (35 min from CBD) · $$

One of the top-rated craft breweries in South Africa, with a taproom in Somerset West that rewards the 35-minute drive from the CBD. The Empowered Stout and the Titan IPA are benchmark South African examples. The outdoor seating overlooks the Helderberg Mountains, making this an ideal Saturday morning stop before heading back into the city via the Winelands. The charcuterie board is specifically designed around the beer range.

  13. 13

    Villains Ale House

    $$

The Woodstock creative district's local institution, operating out of a handsomely converted Victorian warehouse on Albert Road. The beer program balances approachable session ales with a more adventurous experimental range. The kitchen produces proper food rather than bar snacks, and the Sunday afternoon sessions are something of a neighbourhood institution. Dog-friendly throughout, and one of the few craft beer venues in Cape Town that genuinely welcomes families before 18:00.
