Best Live Music Bars in Cape Town

14 live music venues, ranked and reviewed by our editors. Jazz at the foot of Table Mountain, blues in De Waterkant, indie rock in Observatory.

  1. 01

    The Crypt Jazz Restaurant

    St George's Mall, City Bowl · $$$

Cape Town's most atmospheric jazz venue, housed inside the vaulted stone basement of St George's Cathedral. The acoustic effect of centuries-old arches is extraordinary. We recommend arriving early on Fridays for the weekly resident quartet, then ordering the springbok carpaccio and a bottle from their focused South African wine list. The sound bounces beautifully and the crowd is always a mix of serious jazz enthusiasts and curious first-timers. Book in advance, always.

  2. 02

    Shimmy Beach Club

    Duncan Dock, V&A Waterfront · $$$

The only proper beach club in the Cape Town city centre, with a dedicated live music stage that hosts everything from afrobeat DJs to full soul bands. Weekends from 16:00 bring the energy up sharply. Sip a sundowner mojito and watch the sun dissolve into Table Bay while a live band wraps the whole scene in warm brass and percussion. A Cape Town original.

  3. 03

    Asoka Bar and Restaurant

    Kloof Street, Gardens · $$

Tucked beneath a canopy of milkwood trees on the city's most characterful bar strip, Asoka programs live jazz on Thursday through Saturday evenings. The sound spills through the bamboo partitions onto the street-facing terrace. Their cocktail list leans Cape Malay, with tamarind sours and rooibos gimlets that beat the generic hotel bars at their own game. Best on a warm Thursday when the whole of Kloof Street is buzzing.

  4. 04

    The Waiting Room

Long Street, City Bowl · $$

Long Street's legendary rooftop bar, with a stage that has launched more Cape Town bands than any other venue. The music policy is broadly indie, alternative, and local hip-hop, with a booking calendar that mixes established acts with unsigned talent on the same bill. The views across the city bowl from the rooftop terrace are hard to beat, and the beer selection covers every local craft brewery worth knowing.

  5. 05

    Mercury Lounge

De Villiers Street, De Waterkant · $

The closest thing Cape Town has to a proper underground music venue. Mercury programs three or four acts a week across genres, with a particular strength in alternative rock, goth, and electronic acts. Entry is cheap, drinks are honest, and the crowd genuinely cares about the music. Stay late on Saturdays when local DJs take over after midnight and the basement fills with smoke and bass.

  6. 06

    Yours Truly

Bree Street, City Bowl · $$$

One of the more grown-up options on Bree Street, Yours Truly pairs a serious South African natural wine list with a Tuesday and Wednesday jazz program that draws Cape Town's best young musicians. The room is small, the acoustics are good, and the lamb kofta bar snacks are worth ordering even if you're only staying for one glass. A quiet favourite among the city's music professionals.

  7. 07

    Prohibition Bar

Green Point, Atlantic Seaboard · $$

Speakeasy styling done with real restraint rather than Instagram gimmickry. Prohibition hosts a blues and soul program on Friday and Saturday nights that genuinely competes with anything the city centre offers. The house cocktails are tight and well-priced for the neighbourhood. Arrive before 21:00 to get a table near the stage, or you'll be standing at the back for the headliner.

  8. 08

    The Piano Bar

Mouille Point, Atlantic Seaboard · $$

Exactly what it says, and none the worse for it. The resident pianist plays six nights a week, with a repertoire that ranges from classic jazz standards to contemporary covers. The front bar is walk-in, the booths at the back require a reservation. We recommend the gin and tonic menu, which lists 22 South African craft gins alongside house-made botanical tonics.

  9. 09

    Josephine's

Lower Main Road, Observatory · $

The Observatory scene's best-kept open secret. Josephine's programs folk, acoustic, and indie artists through the week with a particular strength on Sunday afternoons, when the room fills with students and locals for a session that runs well into the evening. The craft beer list is Observatory-focused, meaning local microbreweries you won't find on the tourist trail. One of the most genuinely local bars in this guide.

  10. 10

    Rafikis

Kloof Nek Road, Tamboerskloof · $

Pan-African in spirit and soundtrack, Rafikis packs out its terrace bar on reggae and highlife nights. The cocktail menu draws on ingredients from across the continent: baobab, moringa, hibiscus, rooibos. The music is loud, the crowd is young, and the vibe is genuinely inclusive in a way that some Cape Town bars haven't quite managed. Open until 04:00 on Friday and Saturday nights.

  11. 11

    Fireman's Arms

Buitenkant Street, Cape Town CBD · $

Cape Town's oldest surviving pub, in operation since 1864, with a stage that hosts rock and blues acts on Thursday through Saturday. The interior has barely changed in 40 years, which is part of the charm. The beer selection is wider than you'd expect from the exterior, and the Thursday night sessions have a loyal following among working musicians who drop in to sit in with whoever is playing that week.

  12. 12

    Aces 'n' Spades

    $$ · Open Tue–Sat from 8pm

Cape Town's rock and roll bar since 2012, tucked up an alley off Long Street on Hout Street. Live bands, dark wood, taxi wings, and strong cocktails draw a loyal late crowd. City Bowl

The only proper beach club in the Cape Town city centre, with a dedicated live music stage that hosts everything from afrobeat DJs to full soul bands. Weekends from 16:00 bring the energy up sharply.
