Harlow's pick for the best cocktail bar in Lyon. It sits on rue de la Bourse in the Presqu'ile, dressed in blood-red speakeasy trim, and the bartenders work a list pushing ninety drinks. Order an Old Fashioned or whatever the bar builds around a local spirit. Best on a Tuesday or Wednesday before 9pm. The worst seat is a banquette near the door on a packed Saturday, so book a counter stool.
CROIX-ROUSSE · $$ · COCKTAIL BARS
A small speakeasy room down the Croix-Rousse slopes on rue de la Martiniere. Soda runs thematic, made-to-order cocktails, and the bartenders put on a little bottle-juggling show when the room thins out. Order whatever sits at the top of the rotating menu and let them steer. Hit it on a weeknight between 7pm and 9pm, when one bartender still has time to talk. Friday after 8pm packs tight, so grab a counter seat early.

A 1950s American-retro room near Place des Terreaux, all varnished wood, aged leather, and jazz on low. L'Antiquaire is the city's temple of the old-fashioned, and the house version, built on a single block of ice with bourbon and orange zest, is the drink to order. Best on a quiet Sunday from 6pm. The worst seat is the loud back corner late on a weekend, so come early and take a stool near the bartender.

An English pub running in a 16th-century stone room on rue Lainerie since 1995, deep in Vieux Lyon. It pours eleven taps and stocks a wall of books you can read over a pint, and it leans pub over cocktail den. Order a guest ale or a simple highball. Best on a Tuesday quiz night before the screens take over. The worst seat sits under a TV during a rugby clash, so park yourself by the back shelves.
