Amsterdam's Smallest Brown Cafe Since 1798
Cafe de Dokter is on the small Rozenboomsteeg alley in Amsterdam's Centrum. The bar opened in 1798 and the interior is preserved 18th century — original wooden bar, antique jenever bottles, dim oil-lamp lighting, and twelve seats. It is possibly the smallest brown cafe in Amsterdam.
The drinks are simple — Dutch jenever (the proper way: a tulip glass filled to the brim, leaned over and sipped without using your hands), reliable Heineken, and a small selection of Belgian ales. The bar does not serve cocktails. This is a brown cafe in its purest form.
The crowd is mostly tourists drawn by the heritage, plus a few Amsterdam regulars. Best in the late afternoon when the bar is quiet. Pair with Cafe t Smalle for a complete Amsterdam brown cafe evening.
