Jordaan, Amsterdam
Walk-in only. Pontoon terrace fills early on summer afternoons.
Amsterdam's Most Photographed Canal Terrace
Cafe t Smalle was originally a jenever distillery from 1786, then converted into a brown cafe in the 1970s. The bar is in the Jordaan and the small pontoon terrace over the Egelantiersgracht canal is the most photographed bar terrace in Amsterdam.
The drinks are simple Dutch and Belgian beers, jenever, and reliable wine. The kitchen is small. The bar is best on summer afternoons when the pontoon terrace runs full and the canal traffic provides theatre.
The crowd is mixed Jordaan locals and tourists drawn by the canal terrace. Pair with Cafe de Dokter for a complete Amsterdam heritage brown cafe evening.
