SEEN Restaurant and Bar spreads across the 26th and 27th floors of the Avani Plus Riverside hotel on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya. It is the rooftop that looks back at Bangkok, and at dusk the whole skyline stacks up across the river in one long glowing line.
The venue belongs to Olivier da Costa, the Lisbon restaurateur who also runs SEEN rooms in Portugal and Nice. He brought the format to Bangkok with a glassed dining room and terrace on 26 and an open bar deck above it on 27. Google Maps holds the venue at 4.6 from more than 1,700 reviews, rare air for a Bangkok rooftop operating at this scale.
The 26th floor handles dinner, with a kitchen the house describes as modern Mediterranean with Asian and Brazilian accents. The 27th floor is the one to aim for, an open deck with low seating and a bar that faces the water. Because Thonburi sits on the west bank, the sunset happens behind you and the last light falls on the towers of Sathorn instead, which is exactly what you want in a photograph.
The cocktail list runs playful. The Rooftop Guide singles out Ant in the Pants and Don't Call Me Mister Mule among the signatures, and the bar program has been shaped by Mochammam Fadli, a Chivas Masters winner. The wine list leans Portuguese, which follows from the ownership.
Rain is the honest caveat, and between May and October it arrives most evenings. The glassed 26th floor keeps the view without the weather, so a wet forecast is a reason to book dinner rather than a reason to cancel. On December 31 the deck becomes one of the city's better countdown perches and sells out weeks ahead.
Within our ranking of rooftop bars in Bangkok, SEEN is the river pick alongside Three Sixty Lounge at the Millennium Hilton further along the Thonburi bank. Our full Bangkok bar guide covers the rest of the city, and the global rooftop bars hub ranks the decks worldwide.
SEEN suits the dinner first crowd, couples who want the skyline without the elbow to elbow rail of the famous decks, and groups who can settle into a sofa for a full evening. It is less of a queue and more of a booking than Sky Bar at Lebua across the water.
Getting there is part of the evening. The hotel runs a shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier, a short walk from Saphan Taksin BTS, and a taxi over Taksin Bridge does the same work in traffic. Arrive by 6pm for golden hour; the venue runs from 11am to midnight daily.
One practical note on the address. The hotel sits a few minutes from the riverside malls, so SEEN pairs naturally with an afternoon at Icon Siam across the water before the shuttle ride over. Treat the whole Thonburi bank as one evening and the geography starts working for you instead of against you.
