Liberty or Death opened on Erottajankatu in 2014 with a deliberately combative attitude toward what the Helsinki bar scene was doing at the time. The name comes from Patrick Henry's 1775 speech and was, on opening, intended to read as cocktail-bar-as-revolutionary-statement. Twelve years later the bar is one of the most-decorated rooms in Northern Europe - Asia's 50 Best (yes, the bar somehow qualifies through a regional connection), multiple international award shortlists, and a quiet consensus that it is the most technically accomplished cocktail bar in Finland. The bar's identity is most cleanly read through what it refuses to do.
What the bar does do is make excellent custom cocktails on demand. Tell the bartender what you want; trust the result. Order one drink, drink it slowly, order a second. Liberty or Death is a two-drink visit; the third is unnecessary and the bartender will quietly steer you toward leaving. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
