A Preserved 1880s Tobacco Shop That Pours Cocktails
A Tabacaria sits on Rua de São Paulo in Cais do Sodré in a former tobacco shop that the bar has preserved almost untouched. The shop sign over the door still reads “Tabacaria,” the original 1880s wooden cabinetry holds back-bar bottles, and the interior smells faintly of pipe-tobacco varnish a hundred and forty years deep into the wood. The conversion to a cocktail bar happened in 2013; the room itself is what gives it the hidden-gem ranking.
Capacity is roughly twenty seats — eight at the bar, twelve at the small tables and the window-bench. The cocktail menu changes seasonally but the format that matters is bartender’s choice: tell the bartender the spirit you want and a taste profile, and the build that arrives uses Portuguese vermouth, ginja, medronho or a Madeiran fortified wine alongside a chosen base spirit. The drinks are restrained and clean — closer to the Berlin spec-bar tradition than to the maximalist Lisbon norm.
Walk-ins only. The bar opens at 7pm and is at capacity by 9:30pm on weekends. The crowd is mostly Lisbon locals and the small, knowledgeable end of the tourist trade. No reservations. No food beyond a small plate of Portuguese cheese the bar offers without charge with the second drink.
Best Time to Visit
Tuesday or Wednesday at 8pm. The bar is at its calmest and the bartenders take time on each build.
Who It Is For
Cocktail drinkers visiting Lisbon who want a small room and a Portuguese-base-spirit programme. Best for two; the bar suits a solo visit.
