Quimera Brewpub

Brewpub Alcântara $$

Quimera Brewpub occupies an 18th century carriage tunnel at Rua Prior do Crato 6 in Alcântara, and it remains the only bar in Lisbon where you drink a house brewed IPA under a stone vault built for royal horses.

Who would love it: beer drinkers tired of the Bairro Alto crush who want something brewed on site in a setting no other city can copy. Who would hate it: anyone hunting cocktails or a late club night, since the taps close by 1am at the latest.

The room

The tunnel is the whole show. VisitPortugal describes Quimera as a craft beer pub inside an 18th century historical royal tunnel, and the long barrel vault of bare stone swallows sound, light, and any sense of the present century.

Brewing kit sits in view at the back, a reminder that this is a working microbrewery rather than a themed bar. Lighting stays low and candles do real work here.

What to order

Start with whatever house IPA is pouring, then work through the rotating taps, which lean on Quimera's own recipes with guest Portuguese craft beers alongside. Atlas Lisboa highlights the house brews as the reason to cross town, and the tap list changes often enough that regulars log visits on Untappd to keep up.

Expect Lisbon craft prices, around 5 euros a pint rather than Bairro Alto tourist rates. The snack list stays short, so eat before you descend.

Ask the bar staff what came out of the tanks most recently. The brewers pour here themselves on quiet nights, and the conversation about Portuguese hops and tunnel humidity comes free with the beer.

The crowd and the timing

Doors open at 5pm Wednesday through Sunday, and the early evening crowd skews local: Alcântara creatives, LX Factory workers, and beer pilgrims ticking off Lisbon's brewing map. Friday and Saturday nights run to 1am and fill the vault by 9pm.

Go on a Wednesday or Thursday if you want a quiet table under the arch and time to talk through the tap list with the staff. The 15E tram and Alcântara Mar station both drop you within a short walk.

The neighbourhood

Alcântara spent a century as Lisbon's working riverfront and the last decade becoming its creative quarter. LX Factory, the converted industrial complex under the Ponte 25 de Abril, sits a short walk away and supplies dinner options from pizza to fine dining before the tunnel opens.

The docas along the river hold the louder, glossier bars. Quimera works as the quiet, character filled counterweight a few streets uphill, on the route between the river and the Santos design district.

Know before you go

The tunnel stays cool even in August, which makes it one of the few Lisbon bars that improves in a heatwave. The stone also amplifies a crowd, so a full Saturday vault gets loud despite the low music.

Remember the schedule: closed Monday and Tuesday, doors at 5pm the rest of the week. Arrive before 8pm on weekends if your group wants one of the alcove tables rather than standing room at the bar.
