A Provenza walk

Vintrash, Provenza

Vintrash sits on Calle 8 in Provenza, the El Poblado nightlife strip that, over the last fifteen years, has become Medellín's most concentrated drinking district. The bar opened in 2013 with a deliberately rougher aesthetic than the polished cocktail bars further up Carrera 36 — concrete floors, graffiti walls, an alternative-electronic soundtrack, and a crowd that skewed younger and more local than Provenza's typical tourist visitor. The right way to think about Vintrash is to walk Provenza as a single nightlife corridor. Five stops, with Vintrash as the third.

Stop 01 · 8pm
Mercado del Río
The food hall on Calle 24, ten minutes' walk west of Provenza. Twenty kitchens, communal tables, beer and cocktails from a central bar. The right place to eat before the night starts; arepa, bandeja paisa, ceviche, the standard Antioquian regional plates.
Stop 02 · 9.30pm
Carrera 36 corridor
Walk east on Calle 10 to Carrera 36 and turn left. The street is the spine of polished El Poblado nightlife — Carmen, Mercat, Bao Restaurante. A drink at Bao's street-facing bar for ten minutes is the warm-up; the proper night is further north.
Stop 03 · 10.30pm — Vintrash
Vintrash, the entry to Provenza proper
Where the night actually starts. Vintrash is the gateway bar between polished El Poblado and the harder-edged Provenza nightlife. Order an aguardiente shot at the standing bar; take a small table near the back; the soundtrack runs from local hip-hop to electronic. The room fills from 10.30pm onwards; the bar runs honest drink prices (aguardiente shot around 8,000 pesos, beer around 9,000). Two drinks at Vintrash is the visit.
Stop 04 · 12am
Provenza proper
The Provenza side streets — Calle 8 around Carrera 35 — fill from midnight onwards with the open-air bars, salsa rooms, and DJ-driven cocktail bars that have made the neighbourhood famous. Walk the block; pick a bar that looks the right energy for the moment. Provenza is a single long street rather than a destination.
Stop 05 · 2am
A late food stand
The street-food stalls at the end of Provenza run until 4am most weekends. Arepa con queso, empanadas, an arepuela with hogao. The right end of any Provenza night.

Vintrash is the bar that anchors the transition between dinner-time El Poblado and the late-night Provenza scene. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays; open Wed-Sun. Walk-in only. The room is loud enough that conversation works at the bar; the standing room near the door is busy from 11pm onwards.
